WASHINGTON ? There?s little question that every road game for Charlie Davies will have a special feel to it. The fact that he?s playing soccer at this level once again after what he?s been through is a story that?s resonated with fans all across the league.

But this weekend?s trip to New England also brings Davies back to his roots, as he returns home New England to face the Revolution. The 24-year-old grew up near Manchester, N.H., an hour?s drive from Gillette Stadium, where he?ll play Saturday evening.

WASHINGTON ? Straight after scoring D.C. United?s opening goal last Saturday night, Josh Wolff ripped off his jersey and made a beeline for the Barra Brava.

With a look of sheer joy flashed on his face, the half-naked World Cup veteran leapt into the stands, happy to please his new fans with a goal in his RFK debut.

What made this moment such a cathartic one for Wolff? Consider that when he arrived in DC in December, he was a castaway from Sporting Kansas City, no longer seen as an option in their 4-3-3 offensive system after seven seasons with the club.

A busy weekend in the USSF Development Academy saw a number of MLS teams emerge as winners.

Real Salt Lake came away from four games undefeated, winning all but one match. The U-18s got things started right by beating Santa Cruz Breakers Academy 4-0, before the U-16s grabbed a 4-3 win of their own. The only blemish of the weekend came when the U-18s tied De Anza Force 2-2, while the U-16s won 4-1 for their second win in two days.

WASHINGTON ? Amid the Charlie Davies love-a-thon at RFK Stadium last weekend, there was another feel-good story that was nearly lost in the shuffle of D.C. United's 3-1 win over Columbus:

Chris Pontius made his first start since last August.

The versatile attacker started and went 90 minutes in the win, his first significant game action since a hamstring injury knocked him out seven months ago and required offseason surgery. On Tuesday, Pontius said said he's fully recovered.

Abracadabra! What a magical Week 1.

If a genie had granted someone the perfect opening week to MLS, the results could hardly have been different from everything that happened in the past seven days.

Twenty-seven goals in 10 games. Sparkling debuts from two of the league?s new designated players. Terrific stadium atmospheres, even in cities where the weather refused to cooperate.

There was also a rising star who won a game with his first career goal, a wide-open, six-goal game in the new Canada derby, and a powerful display from the defending champs.
